Club History

History

Formed in the early 1970's primarily for road racing, the Thunder Bay Cycling Club has a long history in Thunder Bay. In 1989 the Club was reformed to incorporate all types of cycling. Affiliating itself with the Ontario Cycling Association in 1995, the Club was incorporated under the laws of Ontario and has an Executive Board of eight members that meet once a month for general business. A General Meeting is held annually in October along with an Awards Banquet and Social.

There is a full calendar of events for all four sections in the Club. The members consist of varied groups of people of all ages and abilities. A general membership allows participation in all sections of the Club. We encourage everyone to participate in Club events, regardless of their cycling abilities.

The Club caters to riders of all skill levels and interests.

The Thunder Bay Cycling Club offers riders of all ages and abilities an opportunity to get together and enjoy the sport of cycling. Our  Group Rides, held on Sundays, provide both long and short routes on the paved roads in and around Thunder Bay. Our Women's Only Rides are held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. These rides are open to women of all ages and are guided and supported to encourage ladies who are new or are just taking up the sport. Our Structured Rides feature great opportunities to learn more about riding in groups.   All of these groups are a great way to get out with a group of friends or meet new people and discover the various cycling routes that our community has to offer.

If you are a more competitive cyclist, the TBCC offers a weekly Thursday night Time Trial Series where you can race against the clock and other people in your age group to judge your own fitness level.  We also hold  Road Races where riders compete in four different categories based on skill level for prizes and bragging rights. We also offer Cyclo-cross Racing in the fall which teaches and encourages bike handling skills.

In the past we have offered younger riders (ages 14 to 18) a Junior Program providing them an opportunity to learn group riding techniques as well as racing skills and strategy.   We now encourage Juniors to join our Structured Rides programs to learn life-long riding skills.

Come on out and discover what the Thunder Bay Cycling Club has to offer!
